Film, science, action: ending violence against women

24 November 2025 18:30 – 20:00 CET
In person, Auditorium A2, Geneva Graduate Institute, Geneva, Switzerland

Data is a powerful tool to capture a problem; film is a powerful tool to humanize it.

On the eve of the annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, this special screening and discussion will explore the global scope and scale of violence against women – its human impact, the power of communities to create change, and the evidence shaping global action.

The event will include the screening of three short films from WHO's Health for All Film Festival (HAFF), as well as excerpts from three feature length films selected by the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH) in Geneva: they tell the stories of women who have experienced violence, and how communities are coming together to prevent future violence from happening.

Flyer for a film screening and discussion titled “Film, Science, Action: Ending violence against women,” with event details, QR code for registration, and an orange filmstrip design featuring images of film scenes. The screening will include:

  • I am naked (France) – directed by Alexandra Mignien
  • A boy’s tale (Nigeria) – directed by Twammsen Danaan
  • Rose (French Polynesia) – directed by Nanethida Nouanesengsy

Excerpts from feature films (FIFDH)

  • Traces (Ukraine) – directed by Alisa Kovalenko

  • Kalari (India) – directed by Maria Kaur Bedi and Satindar Singh Bedi

Following the screening, a moderated discussion will bring together experts on violence against women from the UN’s Special Programme in Human Reproduction (HRP) and the World Health Organziation (WHO), the featured filmmakers, and representatives from the Gender Centre of the Geneva Graduate Institute.

The discussion will draw on new WHO evidence on the prevalence and health impacts of violence against women, as presented in an upcoming global estimates report.

This event includes films and discussions that depict violence against women, including intimate partner and sexual violence. Viewer discretion is advised. Support resources are available for students through the Geneva Graduate Institute, including general and psychological services.

The event is organized by the Gender Centre of the Geneva Graduate Institute in collaboration with the UN’s Special Programme in Human Reproduction (HRP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH).
